If it has a roof, a road, a pipe, a pump, a playground, a furnace, a light, or a lot of moving parts — there’s a good chance Public Works is involved.
Public Works is the department behind many of the things that make day-to-day life at Rainy River First Nations possible.
From keeping water flowing and homes maintained, to responding to emergencies, maintaining community facilities, managing roads and greenspaces, and building the infrastructure our community will need tomorrow — we build, operate, maintain and respond.

Our work doesn’t always get noticed when everything is working.
And honestly, that’s kind of the point.
When the water turns on, the lights come on, the roads are maintained, the furnace works, the grass is cut, the garbage gets collected, the fire department responds, and community facilities are ready to use — Public Works is doing its job.
When something breaks?
We’re usually already on our way.
What does Public Works do?
The team works closely with Chief & Council, leadership, residents, funding partners, consultants, and contractors to deliver projects. They support the infrastructure, facilities and services that residents, staff and visitors rely on every day.
Public works wants to make sure that our community is safe, accessible, and well-maintained. It does that in a variety of ways including:
Public Works After Hours On-Call
The PW Department recognize that not all emergencies happen during operational hours of the department. Often a furnace will go out, or you will have issues with water/sewer after hours. We got you covered here too! The RRFN PW Department has an afterhours on-call phone you are welcome and encouraged to call for any housing, heat, water or sewer related issues.

Housing
Supporting the Nations housing portfolio through inspections, maintenance, renovations, repairs and capital planning and housing program administration.
Our housing work ranges from everyday maintenance calls to major renovations and new home construction.
Water & Wastewater Treatment
Keeping safe, reliable water moving through the community and managing the wastewater collection system.
This includes the Water Treatment Plant, raw water wells, pumps, water distribution system, wastewater collection system, facultative lagoon, low-lift stations, maintenance, inspections, repairs and emergency response.
Operations & Maintenance
This is the portion of our team dedicated to fixing, maintaining, inspecting and troubleshooting the things that keep the community running. They perform activities such as:
- Minor Repairs
- Maintaining Nation-owned facilities and spaces
- Waste and Recycling Collection
- Maintain Park, Greenspaces, and Elder/Senior’s Lawns
- Snow Removal
- Water Delivery
Fire Department & Emergency Response
The Public Works Department and its volunteer team of firefighters and responders are dedicated top supporting fire protection, emergency response and community safey.
When the call comes in, the team responds.
Capital Projects
The Public Works Departments provides technical support to the Capital Projects of Rainy River First Nations. From housing to water and wastewater infrastructure to the major capital projects such as the new Water Treatment Plant, Multi-Use Facility or Long Term Care Facility the PW Team works with leadership, community members, consultants, contractors and funding partners to turn ideas into projects — and projects into buildings and infrastructure.
